“Once a user installs a SpyLoan app, they are prompted to accept the terms of service and grant extensive permissions to access sensitive data stored on the device,” ESET warns. But since then, ESET says the SpyLoan threat has persisted on Google Play and via third-party Android stores while sometimes impersonating official banking services. “The last app identified by ESET is still available on Google Play -however, since its developers changed its permissions and functionality, we no longer detect it as a SpyLoan app.”Īccording to ESET, the SpyLoan apps first emerged in 2020, which later led to a surge in the malicious programs back in 2022, which prompted Google and Apple to crack down. “Before their removal, these apps had a total of more than 12 million downloads from Google Play,” ESET added. In total, ESET recently identified 18 SpyLoan apps that all ran the same underlying computer code and were reported to Google for takedown. The makers of the SpyLoan apps have been circulating them through social media, SMS messages, and websites, along with Google Play. But for now, they’re targeting users in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, not North America. ESET dubbed these malicious programs as “SpyLoan” apps.
